Serendipitous Dreaming | Closed to Sollux

Something about the stress made Roxy sharp, shot something cold and bright through her veins that had her pacing on breaks and tossing at night. The only way Roxy managed to knock herself out was through pure exhaustion: stress had been eating at her, and while she didn't allow herself to have any more emotional moments than the one she had already displayed when she first visited Sollux in the hospital, it had definitely taken its toll.

One of the more unexpected outcomes was her visits on Derse, though.

Though Roxy had reason to believe she had been running around on the moon for quite awhile without actually waking up, opening her eyes to various sights on its surface consumed her curiosity in her sleeping hours. She had gotten better at actually staying conscious there rather than submitting to more sleepwalking, and had explored for a few nights before she found the towers where her fellow Derse dreamers were kept.

Her own chamber mirrored her one back on Earth, minus a few cats: she couldn't really say for the others, since she mostly popped her head into windows where people were sleeping or out, but she guessed it was part of whatever magic kept them from keeling over on the surface of the moon despite their distinctly different biological needs compared to the carapaces.

Most of the dicking around stopped once she found Sollux's room, though.

It was kind of ridiculous how much of her waking hours had come to revolve around visits to him, how complicated her schedule had become to accommodate the hospital time: of course her resting hours would come to be consumed, too.

That night, Roxy dozed lightly against his bed, a chair pulled up towards the side so she could lean over and hide her face away in her arms. Using up so much energy both in- and out-of-dream had left her fatigued down to her bones, and despite the hyper awareness of everything around her, she was more prone to slipping asleep whenever she so much as touched a pillow. The only thing that roused her was movement in the sheets, and she sat up slowly, rubbing the bleariness out of her eyes. Once she realized why, exactly, she had woken up, Roxy froze and leaned forward again, her hands finding the shoulders of the dreamer.

"Lux?"

Sollux opened his eyes with a yawn, frowning when the world around him was black. What?

There were hands on his shoulders then, and Roxy saying his name, and he smiled despite the weirdness of it all. He was probably dreaming. He had the feeling that he'd been dreaming a lot, half forgotten threads of ridiculousness that couldn't be reality chasing each other around in his brain. Mostly, he'd been having nightmares he couldn't see, and occasionally that he was in the hospital, so not being able to see right now made perfect sense to him.

"Rox?" he asked, reaching out into the darkness until he hit hair.

"I'm getting pretty sick of this blind dream," he muttered, but hugged her anyways. Sol staunchly ignored the twisting feeling that this wasn't a dream, that he really was blind, the same way he'd been ignoring it for the endless parade of dreams behind him, and the same way he'd convince himself for endless dreams ahead.

It felt safe in her arms, and he hadn't even realized how freaked out he'd been before until he was relaxing into her.

"What's up," he said from where his face was buried in what felt like her neck but could have easily have been her armpit.

"I didn't think I was gone," Sollux said, confused. This... wasn't a dream, he didn't think. Or it was, but he was awake on Derse.

He was getting confused thinking, trying to tell snatches of memory from dream. It all felt fuzzy and disconnected, blurred out sounds and sensations all wrapped up in a soft dark.

That was ignoring his capital N-M NightMare, however.

"I had the worst dream," he said, tugging away briefly into a sitting position so he could pull on her until she was lying on the bed next to him, where it was easier to cuddle. His body felt sore and exhausted, and he had a headache behind his eyes. "Did I tell you about Vriska?"

"If she's a manic pixie nightmare girl, I suddenly have a new sympathy for how awful that trope is," Sollux said. "But no, she's real. We had kind of a revenge cycle going on until a mutual friend stepped in and stopped us.

"She pushed Tav off a cliff when they were kids, broke his spine. And if... I mean, they're kids, so it shouldn't have been a federal fucking issue for me vigilante justice wise, except she showed up a couple months ago just to mock Tav.

"... so I gave all her money to charity and got her evicted," he admitted, but with a hurried addition. "And that was the end of it! We still didn't like each other but it isn't like we run into each other a lot.

"But I've been having this dream." he paused, didn't go on. It was hard to gather the fragments of it, his mind rejecting it brutally every time he tried to piece it together into something coherent.

Sollux sighed, reassured by the contact, and closing his eyes as if that would help him focus. It was dark either way, but there was something about muscle memory that prompted his brain to get his shit in order.

"It starts out really good - me and Tav are at the park, right? Just fucking around and taking a walk. Tav likes to be out around nature and shit it's disgusting but I love him." Sollux shook his head slightly, fondly, before it faded in the chill of his nightmare.

"He'd picked me a flower, almost fell out of his chair doing it, and it blows away so I'm running after it like I'm in a black and white film going after my hat. I come back, and Vriska is standing over Tavros, shaking him."

Sollux swallowed convulsively, feeling sick to his stomach.

"She can control minds, you know? Make people do shit. And next thing I know I'm - I fucking threw him on the ground. Kicked the shit out of him. The next bit is kind of blurry, I don't know, I can't quite remember it. They were fighting for control of my brain, but I heard birds, and then Vriska screaming. She yells something, I can't remember what, I'm not sure if I could even understand it when she said it."

He took a deep breath, his stomach roiling.

"I... you ever have that moment, when you know exactly what you need to do, and it makes more sense than anything else ever has, even if it's the fucking stupidest thing you've ever thought of? It was like that.

"I break my glasses in half, and I fucking..." Sollux squeezed her, feeling like he's going to throw up, but the pressure of her touch somehow made him feel better.

"Anyways. I don't remember much of the dream after that, it gets kind of dark and blurry and I get a horrific freaking migraine. I think that's what it was actually, just got the onset of a migraine in my sleep."

"Yeah, okay," Sollux said without giving up much of a fight. Cuddling sounded good right then and he was tired and didn't want to think about his nightmare anymore.

Maybe it was trying to tell him something. Maybe it was trying to tell him that Vriska was coming for him. But Vriska wasn't on Derse and he was so... he was good, for right now.

He closed his eyes, relaxed in Roxy's arms, and went to sleep.
