It was late, and Jane was exhausted. She rubbed at her eyes and rolled her shoulders back, a hand moving to knead its fingertips at her neck's nape. The day had been a long one, and she was more than ready to collapse in bed. But alas, there was no rest for the wicked, or the graduate student, as it were. A small cafe located near to her apartment building was well lit, and provided the ideal location for hammering out assignments and studying alike. It had been a long day at work, made longer by the time spent in her night class, and she was more than ready for a pre-studies pick me up.

The stout brunette slid her red-framed specs up onto her head as she walked through the door, rubbing at her eyes once more. She approached the counter and waited to be acknowledged by the wait staff, a soft sigh passing her lips. Dainty, well manicured fingertips flicked her glasses back into place, and she rocked idly back onto her heels. This would make for a long (and rather boring) evening, that much was clear.

Banners went up all over town advertising the arrival of the carnival. 'ONE WEEK ONLY!' the signs proclaimed as the carnies set up the fairway and the rides. A ferris wheel rose above the trees of central park and other attractions towered over the lowly humans as opening day approached.

At last the morning had arrived and the ticket booths opened for business, selling bundles to ride the rides and play the games. The rides included favorites like the ferris wheel, the zipper, a carousel, the tunnel of love, the reverse bungee, the mechanical bull, and many others. The fairway flashed lights and beeped and played music as the fair workers tried to lure in customers to the shooting range and the Ring the Bell. The food area and strolling vendors carried cotton candy, popcorn, corn dogs, and just about anything you could deep fry.

"Come one, come all!" cried a garishly dressed greeter, brandishing a camera and offering to take photos of arrivals (for purchase later in one of the stalls of course). Even at noon the booths were lit up with flashing lights, offering oversized stuffed animals for those who managed to win games of skill or chance. The facepainting booth did fast work, based on how many of the fairgoers had flowers or spirals curling on their cheeks, with the occasional person with a cat face or butterfly mask.

Everywhere you went it smelled of fried foods and sugar, the very air seemed to sparkle as the carnival beckoned you in, offering a multitude of places to go and things to do.
