It had been a couple weeks since the near fiasco at the movies wherein Jake had pointed out a stranger's odd glow and produced one himself. Jane had said then that they were going to talk about things once they returned home, but by the time they arrived, both were too frazzled from the influx in strangers to remember to have the conversation. Only now was Jake even remembering the happening. And the only reasoning for that was a memory hitting him of a strange golden city in his dreams where he discussed a few things with his cousin, Jade.

Jake sighed as he laid in bed, contemplating how to bring it up to his girlfriend, but just decided to be blunt about it. He was terrible with these sort of things and lacked tact anyway, so what was the point in fretting over it? Resolving himself, the man sat up and got out of bed, moving into the kitchen where he knew his love would be baking, seeing as it was a rare day off for her and their summer classes had finished earlier that week.

"Janey? Can we talk about something? It's about the events at the arcade and my sheer lack of tact. We were going to talk about it afterward, but never got around to it," he reminded her, grabbing a seat at the kitchen table and reaching over to take a freshly baked cookie from the plate in front of him.

After his completely unhelpful near-argument with Feferi, and dealing with Dave practically laughing in his face, Dirk spent a lot of time trying to block the terrible double date from his mind. He quickly found he couldn't focus on any of his work, though, and decided to try a different tactic. He needed someone else to talk to. Someone who wouldn't laugh or glub at him. (As he didn't actually have many friends, it didn't take long for him to decide who to talk to. He just hoped Jane wouldn't mind.)

He spent a long moment staring at the blank text box, followed by several minutes of typing and deleting messages before he finally sent one. Christ, he felt like an idiot.

Insert Coin didn't look like much from the outside: dark tinted windows and a large green and black sign over top. Nevertheless the bike rack out front was almost always full and finding parking could be quite a challenge.

It lay several blocks north of the park, nearer to Skaia U than Crocker U and well nestled in the heart of the area where most Skaia students who lived off campus tended to settle in a more densely packed area with apartments and eateries. It didn't bother advertising much since it had become a staple of college life in Sburb and business was booming.

Inside the place was dimly lit with scattered neon and the comforting blue glow of abundant screens. Most of the floor space was devoted to games that ran the gamut from pac man up to the more modern games with motion capture so you could duck your character behind cover and several DDR machines to trick people into exercising.

A long glass counter stretched to your right as you came in, complete with the full range of prizes that you could redeem your tickets for, all the way up to the 100,000 ticket replica light saber that gleamed in its own case behind the counter. The employees generally looked bored as they exchanged cash for tokens and tickets for prizes.

Farther in was another counter that the owners had had the brilliant idea of making available to food truck vendors. The menu varied drastically depending on the day and regular customers tracked Insert Coin's social media feeds to find out which food trucks were scheduled for which days. There were some tables and chairs clustered near that counter as well as the more active games like DDR for entertainment while you ate. The water fountains and bathrooms were near there as well.

There was also a more enclosed area upstairs, with private rooms for karaoke and private parties, where you could reserve a room and a particular game ahead of time for a few hours. The owner often said that putting in a service elevator had been his smartest investment and a large chunk of the arcade's income came from people setting up soulcalibur tournaments or bringing in their own consoles to take advantage of top of the line projection and sound equipment to game on a screen the size of a wall.

For clients of age they also sold beer and some basic cocktails, though if you spilled you were banned for a month with second offenses earning you a lifetime ban.

Have fun!

((Mod note: The arcade and food trucks will be wholly staffed by NPCs for now so feel free to set future threads here for parties or hang outs. It has any arcade game you want. The areas so far are: Main Arcade, Prize Counter, Food Counter, Karaoke, and Party Rooms. Let us know if you want other areas! Also this isn't leading to plot or anything, we just felt the time was right for a new neutral space and an open thread!))

It had been awhile since her spring classes were over and she had a break from school during the summer. She didn't find interest in studying all year long without a break even if it would've helped her get her bachelor's degree quicker. Due to finals and saving the city from mass destruction by giant monsters; Terezi had been slacking on going to her favorite bakery where one of her friends had worked. They hadn't talked much since her last visit and Terezi was ready rectify that.

Stepping into the shop, the bells attached gave a friendly alert to the employees as she entered. Her long cane tapping against the hard tiled floor and she closed her eyes to breath in the fresh baked treats. With her heightened sense, she could tell some of her favorites had just finished coming out of the oven. It wasn't long before turning her head slightly that she could pick up Jane's scent from across the room. Walking over, she smiled, "Jane!" Terezi called out, her pace quickening until approaching the glass case of cookies, cupcakes and pie. "Hey, I survived classes again. What about you?" Her excitement on being able to talk to her friend again had her rushing with topics to discuss. "How were finals?"

Jane's Dad eventually let her off work early on in the night, wishing her a lovely evening as he closed up shop, relieving her duties. The young woman couldn't help but tread home excitedly, unable to hide the wide smile on her face- not that she actually wished to do so. The day had been quite eventful, with the bakery booming and making a new friend, or at least, the potential of a new friend. In her hand, she carried the slip of paper Dirk had given her, excited to read it over and contact the man.

She reached her apartment in record time, unlocking the door and stepping over the threshold. After taking off her jacket, she turned to the lightened interior, excited to tell Jake the news.

"Hey Jake, I'm home! You won't believe what happened today!"

Since Dirk had started avoiding the Corner Cafe, he needed to find a new place to get Dave his sweet fix. (Dirk himself didn't have a sweet tooth, but his brother definitely did.) A quick google search told him there was a family run bakery in town, and he decided that was a good a place as any to start. With a list of Dave's requests in hand (apple pie and chocolate chip cookies, along with a vague request for "donuts"), he flash-stepped a few blocks away from the bakery. He stopped in a nearby alley, making sure his shoes hadn't started to smoke again, then walked the rest of the way.

A little bell above the door announced his presence as he entered the bakery. It was a cute place and reminded him of a shop he and Dirk had stopped in once when they were kids. He frowned as the memory turned sour, but shook it off and approached the display case of baked goods. He bent down to examine a pie on a lower shelf. Dave could be picky about apple pie, but this one looked like it would meet his high standards. Cookies were a much easier venture, and Dirk only spared the plate of them a quick glance before making his way to the back of the line in front of the cash register.

An often seen sight on the campus of Skaia U. had been missing. A food truck that was practically infamous for it's filling, cheap food seemed to have disappeared, and was not able to be found at any other popular eating spots in the city. There was no sign left, no explanation anywhere to be found...and if one was to try to contact the owner either at his home or even by phone, you'd receive no response. Vanished in a heartbeat, almost done too well to be anything but practiced.

Jake English was gone.

A memory of the past, a battle that brought him down to the lowest pegs, and relationships to those he held dearest collapsing all around him. Hope had always been an important part of who Jake was, far before he actually ran on the stuff. But he was out of it now. Completely drained, and refusing to take any from someone else. Why? He didn't deserve it after all. What use could he put it to anyway? This city had heroes far better than him, and he'd only get in their way.

He had wracked his brain to try to find some way to actually help out people he'd still consider important but just knew they wouldn't want anything to do with him anymore...and he realized, they all have lives. The battles they face will be those of monsters and creatures beyond what people could handle. But there was always crime on the streets that'd need helping with, and Jake could do that. He'd just need a little courage.

That's where a bit of drinking got him into trouble.

The man was currently fighting a group of muggers who had just tried to jump him, dark green handkerchief over his face as if that was a good enough mask. He didn't really care, eye bruised and blood darkening the cloth as it ran from his nose. Two of the men were already knocked out, and the third was trying to just run by this point. "C-Come on man! We've all gotta eat, you know how hard it is out here!"

While he'd usually make some quip or remark, there was only a dark look in his usually bright green eyes. The color had somehow changed to just...black. But if you knew the man, you'd recognize him. He was dirty, beaten and bloody, and looking sickly...but this was Jake English all the same. He jumped on the man without mercy, a flurry of punches knocking his lights out without much more trouble.

Jake stumbled to his feet, leaning up against the wall of the alley and lifting his mask to spit blood out onto the ground. The night was still young, and he'd have more trash to clean up before he was done, he was certain. He could even hear someone walking nearby...maybe it'd be sooner than he expected, black eyes focused forward and preparing himself for round 2.

The hour after the finish of the battle felt like an absolute blur to Jake English. He remembers slipping through alleyways as news vans and police drove towards the park. He remembers hearing someone or another call out, saying he looked like the guy who transformed in broad daylight. Not his smartest move. But he doesn't remember getting back to his apartment at some point. He doesn't remember curling up on his kitchen floor and just staring up at the ceiling. Did he say something to Jane before he left? Did he check on Dirk? No...he didn't, did he? He just ran. He did what he's known all his life. He just ran.

He was a failure of a hero. Not only that, but a failure of a friend. A failure of a boyfriend. A failure of a man. A failure. Part of him could tell that his current state was helped along by his hope having been used up. But this had been a long time building, buried deep in him as he tried to act as if his life was fine where it was. To push the past back so far that he could look back and not even see it. But just one fight, and it caught up to him without losing its breath.

Plans and thoughts poured through his mind, eyes flicking about the ceiling as if it was a blank slate to put them all on. He could leave the city, other heroes far stronger than him were already here. They could protect everyone better than him. Jane could find someone better in so many ways, so that'd be best for her. And his food truck...he could just convert that back to a regular one. Just start driving. Leave it all like he was never a part of anybody's lives.

That'd probably be best.

A week had passed since the battle at the park, and Dirk still had not risen from his comatose state. Following the battle, Jane had taken him home and instructed Feferi (who had stumbled in close behind) to try and get some water in him before going out and searching for Jake. Upon returning, there was obvious signs that she had been crying, but she said nothing about what had happened. With her, she brought clothes and supplies, and proceeded to set up camp. There was no way she was leaving before Dirk was safe; that much was certain.

The week that followed was filled with tension as Jane worked to care for him as best she could. She purchased a heart rate monitor using a portion of her inheritance and set it up in the room, checking it regularly to be sure that all was still well.  Upon learning that feeding him was difficult at best, she also purchased equipment so that he could have a feeding tube. Within a few days, Jane had learned more about hospital equipment and how to care for a comatose patient than she had ever imagined she could possibly need. It was difficult work, but she didn't care. She had lost her best friend once because of her own selfish behavior. She refused to lose him again.

Blackouts intermittently prevented anyone from getting close to the room. It was strange to say the least, but only solidified what they all had expected: this was related somehow to his developing powers. Never one to back down, Jane pressed forward, continuing to care for him to the best of her ability.

Dave as well needed care of his own. He refused to leave his brother's side, even when the blackouts rendered him unconscious. He lay there motionless, curled around his brother's own unmoving body, refusing to eat. Jane gave him vitamins and water whenever he found the energy to take them, and sat with the two often, doing her best to provide support in any way she could. Dave would not speak, but she knew he was grateful. And worried. So was she.

Feferi had stayed with them from the start, and though Jane still was far from frond- Ahem, fond- of Feferi's actions, she could not deny that without her she would have had far more bags under her eyes and a far emptier stomach. Despite the fact that Feferi knew nothing of nursing, she was very helpful when she wasn't annoyingly underfoot. She took watches often so that Jane could rest and make them meals, and despite Jane's wariness of her pushy tendencies, she was beginning to see why Dirk might have taken such a shine to her. She was helpful and caring, two qualities that Jane valued immensely.

Today Jane sat in an armchair near to Dirk's bed, reading a mystery novel. Or attempting to, anyway. She read the same line over and over again, getting no where. Her eyes flicked up to Dirk's pale form, and his brother who still clung to him as if that was all that tethered him to this world. Jane took off her glasses and rubbed at her eyes, her own heart seeming to keep time with the slow, steady beats of Dirk's heart rate monitor. Soon, she would try and get Dave to take a vitamin, but now, she watched them, eyes filled with love and worry. "Please Dirk..." she whispered into the air, voice barely louder than a breath. "... Come back to us..."

You fought hard. You fought bravely. And no matter which part of town you started on, now you're standing here, in the park, with two staggeringly tall pillars of light and dark before you.

You aren't alone, though, and for now at least, there is a moment of peace. Across the lawn, you'll spot another set of heroes, looking as tired and broken as you feel.

Maybe you guys should exchange notes.

Vriska had been trailing Jane for a while now, waiting for a chance to catch her home alone. Finally that chance had come, and Vriska was fully prepared to weasel her way into the lovely Miss Crocker's apartment. And with any luck, she'd find herself on Jane's good side.

She gave Jane just enough time to get settled in before making her way to her door step, bible in hand. Well, it wasn't exactly a bible. It was actually an ordinary hard cover book wrapped in construction paper with the word "8i8le" scrawled over it.

Vriska's hair was pinned up in a tight bun, and she was wearing an unassuming blue cardigan and the only pair of khakis she owned. Adjusting the over-sized sunglasses to better hide her face, Vriska cradled the holy book in one arm and gave the door a chipper, eight-rapped knock.

Jake's attempt to figure out what exactly was going on with Dirk hadn't really...gone the best. He'd needlessly used some hope energy and had been in a depressive state for who knows how long. He certainly wasn't sure. He hadn't checked the time when he rushed to Dirk's in both anger and concern for his friend. He hoped still his friend.

There'd been a slight detour with a cry and then pep talk in the park and now Jake knew he had to get back to Jane. The two had to talk about what happened...Jake had to confront this little feeling of failure. It was frustrating to have to come back to her in defeat, all while having made no real progress with Dirk. The guy had run away from him at the speed of light, all while just...Okay. Calm down. He needs to be calmer to speak with Janey. No need to show up to her in a huff.

He kept those words in mind as he entered his apartment, looking about to see if Jane had left his room yet or if she might still be napping. So to be on the safe side, he called out a bit quietly, the worries deep in him being carried quite obviously by his voice.

"...Janey? You up, dear? I uh...just...got back from talking to Dirk. He said anything to you?"

Jane stirred about an hour after Jake had departed for Dirk's, feeling more exhausted than ever despite her lengthy nap. Groggy eyes stared upwards to Jake's ceiling, a perpetual frown etched onto her usually cheery face. She felt absolutely horrible, but she was sure that was nothing compared to what Dirk felt. She was convinced that she deserved every single verbal lashing that she had gotten, and guilt swirled in her abdomen, making each of her limbs feel far heavier than usual. She didn't think much on Jake's absence, deciding that it was better off that he wasn't here right now. Jane felt absolutely hopeless, and the last thing she wanted for him to try... Fixing things. She couldn't even bring herself to rise from his bed, but she couldn't leave things as they had been when Dirk left her apartment, either. She wanted her best friend back, even if he hated her now for all she'd done. Fumbling fingertips found her phone on the bedside table, and she pinned a message to Dirk, fighting back tears as she did so.

The main event at the party was a large former wine bottle which had been painted bright pink. It was set up in the middle of the living room, with the couches and tables pushed back so there was space for everyone to gather around who wanted to participate.

To play: Diagram 1 Make a new top level post of your character spinning the bottle. It need be no more complicated than "<Character name> spins the bottle." but feel free to go as complicated as you would like! Each character who is participating gets a maximum of 2 spins and we would prefer that you space your two out.

Please title your post at least "<Character name>" to make readability easier later.

A mod will then use a random number generator to determine which of the participating characters your spin lands on and reply to your post with the result of your spin. If the spin lands on your character, you will receive a direct skype message from said mod to inform you of this, with a link directly to the post.

The character who spun should then make a post of their character kissing the recipient in whatever fashion is most in character for them.

The character who was kissed should then respond.

The reactions can continue for up to three posts each (diagram 2)!

If you wish to continue beyond that please take it to the main party thread or create a new thread!

Participant list based on the survey, meaning your spin could produce any of these results: John, Jade, Rose, Dave, Jane, Jake, Dirk, Aradia, Tavros, Sollux, Karkat, Nepeta, Kanaya, Terezi, Vriska, Eridan, or Feferi!

Ever since she had moved the Striders (forcibly) to their new apartment, she had been looking for an opportunity to throw them a proper housewarming since her attempt to provide them with cake and excitement hadn't quite hit the mark.

Now, after nearly a month, Friday the 13th seemed by FAR the most auspicious day to get her dreams of a celebratory party underway at last.

Invitations had been sent out to everyone Feferi had met who knew about powers, either from SMURG or through serendipity. Bribes, threats, and coercion had been employed to best effect to insure attendance. Catering had been ordered, decorators hired, and the Striders gotten out of the way for the morning to give the professionals time to set up.

Enough food to feed a small army (or pantheon) lay spread across the kitchen counters and dining room table. Extra seating had been strewn about inside and out on the terrace. The invite had promised food, fun, and a hot tub if people were so inclined. The time for the start of the party was 3 pm.

Feferi, resplendent in a short sequin-covered pink dress was ready. Streamers and balloons in red and orange decorated every surface and people should be arriving soon, with valets downstairs to tend to the cars and a red carpet to direct the guests to the elevator, where they would be directed to the 14th floor (as long as they were on the guest list complete with photos.)

After a long night of emotional ups and downs, Jake and Jane found themselves all wrapped up in the blankets of her sizable bed, and in each others' arms. It had been a night for the books, that much was certain. First a date, and then a visit to her childhood home where she made some rather disturbing discoveries about her mother's true nature. After a long night of expressing feelings through both words and... Various physical affections... The two decided to make their relationship official, and weather the oncoming chaos together as a cohesive unit in both crime fighting and cuteness. Jane was still conked out as Jake texted Sollux, a little bit of drool splotching the shirt he'd borrowed as she rested upon his chest. It had been a long night, and Jane was far from a morning person as it was.

It wasn't until he crossed his arms in a huff that Jane was jostled enough to be woken up, and she grumbled as she stirred, sitting up a bit. She rubbed her eyes groggily and wiped the drool from her lips, giving a little yawn. "Mmnn... Mornin' J..." she mumbled, adjusting the strap of her nightgown so that it rested better on her shoulder. Boyfriend or no boyfriend, she needed to be decent in his presence! "What's the sour face for, hmmm? Not enough that you find yourself graced with the presence of a beautiful woman so early?" She teased, laying back down to curl against him with another yawn.

When we last left our heroes, Jane and Jake's date had been abruptly interrupted by a series of confusing texts from Sollux, requesting that Jane heal Tavros in exchange for his eternal servitude. Distressed by what this could possibly mean in concordance with her already-present suspicions regarding her mother's true nature, Jane resolved to venture to her childhood home, a place she had refused to revisit since finding her father's body there years before, in search of clues. Jake, seeing her obvious apprehension and distress, resolutely deigned to join her, and so they set off together, tension high.

Jane had only taken the time to change clothes and grab some gear before hopping in her truck alongside Jake, her trusty fedora (a gift from her father) tilted smartly atop her wild curls. It was not far from her apartment to her old home, a 45 minute trek at most. When they pulled up front, the house towered above them, the truck almost seeming dwarfed where it rested in the winding, expansive driveway. They parked right outside of the elegant steps that led to the door, and Jane took a slow breath, gathering herself. ".... I have not been here in 7 years." she said, giving a small shake of her head in disbelief. "I... I didn't even get my things after he died. My room should be just as I left it when I moved into the Crocker U dorms freshman year..."
