After the battle, Kanaya had kindly offered Rose a night's respite from the daunting prospect of returning to the dorm she used to share with Jade. Rose had gratefully accepted.
By the time they left the Corner Cafe, exhaustion set in. Rose's injuries were relatively superficial, so she had declined to be healed, but she felt every one of her bruises as they limped back to Kanaya's apartment.
After they had both cleaned themselves up and set up a makeshift bed on the couch, they were too exhausted to talk much. Kanaya bid her a sleepy goodnight, and headed off to her own room, leaving Rose to curl up under the blankets. Despite her initial worries that she wouldn't be able to sleep, she drifted off within minutes.
Rose woke in the morning to the soft sounds of someone moving around the kitchen. She lay there for a few minutes, drifting in and out of sleep, the comfortingly domestic sounds keeping her memories of the previous day's events at bay.
Eventually, the smell of food cooking reached her nose. Stomach rumbling, she levered herself upright and rubbed her eyes. She was sure that she looked like a mess, wearing oversized borrowed pajamas and her hair a veritable bird's nest from sleeping on the couch, but the lure of food was stronger than her desire to make herself presentable. Wrapping a blanket around her shoulders, she shuffled over to the kitchen.
She silently watched Kanaya cook from the doorway, a soft smile on her lips. Rose knew that Kanaya's diet didn't involve much cooking, lately, and the thoughtfulness of the gesture filled her with warmth. She cleared her throat after a few moments to make her presence known.
