Afternoon light streamed through the wide paneled windows that overlook sandy slopes descend down to the ocean, coated in flowing beach grass of bright green and flax. Writing utensils of many types lay interspersed between the sheets of newsprint and waxen tracing papers piled neatly atop the dark oak table. Their edges are rustled by a warm breeze sweeps up from the beach, just weak enough to be provide a charming atmosphere without sending the carefully planned order into chaos.

Despite all this calming setup, Eridan is tapping out text message after text to blow off his own impatience like it was somehow going to accomplish anything but the increased annoyance of his intended guest.

its real important stuff an youre obvviously the only one i can trust wwith it

He had mentioned the occasion the week prior but, the closer it got to the arranged time, the more he wondered if she had neglected to inform him she would not be coming. And after all this prep work on his part too.

He glances at the antique grandfather clock at the end of the room situated between the dual entrance to the conservatory in which he sat, and watches the brass pendulum swing back and forth. It seemed to move far quicker than the time it pretended to tell.

GG:Feferi?
GG: Hello. I am so sorry for the intrusion, but this is Jane. Jane Crocker.
GG: I think I owe you an apology.
GG: No, scratch that.
GG: I most certainly owe you an apology.
GG: A large one.
GG: I am so, so sorry for the behavior I exhibited earlier today. It was wrong of me to fly off the handle like that.
GG: You have done a lot of good for the Striders, and I know that Jake already sees you as a friend.
GG: I hope that perhaps, in time, you could see me as a friend, too.
GG: That person you saw back at the park... That wasn't me. It was who I used to be. And I'd like to prove that to you, if you'd let me.
GG: P.S. I like the pink spandex :B

April 18th was a Monday. Sollux had always hated Mondays like - who didn't? There was nothing special about that. It seemed fitting that the end of his life was going to be on what was largely agreed to be the worst day of the week.

He took a deep breath, and looked at the email he had set to send to Tavros once the conversation with Jane was over. It was short. Simple. Very to the point.

And with that finished, there was no reason left to procrastinate.

The way he saw it, there were two options as far as the current head of Crockercorp stood, what with his brother still living the life of an indentured servant with a contract that only absolved when the Crocker family's shares and positions in the company did: Betty was still alive, and her death had been by and large exaggerated, or Jane had decided to fake refusing the mantle of heiress and become silent head of the company. Or at least a large enough share of it that Sollux's older brother was still legally obligated to work there.

Betty hadn't forced his brother into servitude. They had waited for him to have no other choice. That, or they killed the Captor parental units to force him into having no other choice. Sollux didn't like to think about that much. Either way, Betty had a thing for making people want to work for her, as opposed to forcing them. That was the only reason he could think of as to why Jane hadn't spirited him away into the night by now.

He'd met her ages ago - she'd had plenty of time to take him if she'd wanted to. She must have been waiting to show him that there was something she could give him that he couldn't get from anyone else, after the initial scouting him out under the name 'Gigi'. God, he'd been stupid.

Going home to an empty house felt like a poor idea, especially given that Feferi remained low on blood and high on tension. Her first thought was the Striders, whose domain was very much her domain as well, but they had chosen to keep their wholly inadequate couch... And would probably not be particularly receptive to her bursting in and nesting in their apartment for however long she stayed.

That left Eridan.

She didn't particularly want to have to explain about Kanaya's accident, but between a tense conversation and going home to her empty house was no contest.

The route to his house was nearly as familiar as the way home and she parked her car where she usually did here it wouldn't block he or his family's vehicles.

With less than her usual chipperness Feferi made her way up to the front door, unlocking it and going inside without bothering to knock. She practically lived here sometimes and the Amporas were well used to her ways. It didn't occur to her to text or call and her knees felt too wobbly to look around for Eridan so she made a beeline for his room.

She dug around in his dresser for one of his shirts when she found his room empty and shucked out of the bits of her clothing that weren't good to sleep in, as ever choosing comfort over propriety. In their place she pulled on his longer shirt.

Fef hesitated, then carefully unwrapped Kanaya's scarf from around her throat, gingerly touching the sore area. A shudder worked its way through her and Fef grimaced before burrowing into Eridan's bed, shoving his blankets and pillows around into a comfortable nest and curling up. Between the anemia and the exhaustion from stress she was out like a light, her cheeks unusually pale and the bandage a patch of white against her dark skin.

Kanaya had done as much work as she could before her jitters became too much and she began to pace. Even if she trusted herself to be in public she couldn't go for a nighttime walk because she glowed in the dark! She forced herself to calm down when anxiety-induced claws pressed into her palm.

Old failed garment in hand, she typed a few messages to Karkat and then began to meticulously rip it to shreds.
