April 14th, 2016

Bag packed with her sketchbook, raw meat, and grapes, Kanaya found herself ready for the journey to the park. The walk from her new place was a bit longer than before, so even though she lingered while choosing a workout outfit -- a simple white shirt and roomy ankle-length red skirt -- she overshot the timing and arrived nearly twenty minutes early.

She tucked herself beneath a tree near the upbeat dance class, pulling out her sketchbook. The wispy hair, flabby arms, and neon leotards would serve as good drawing subjects and an easy-to-follow beacon for her fellow superpowered peers to home in on.

Dirk snatched the bottle of sun screen out of Feferi's hand and passed it off to Jake. "Take care of yourself, English. You ain't a child." He told the man, rolling his eyes behind his shades.

Really, he just didn't want Jane to explode and pick a fight with Feferi. (He wasn't sure if he was more worried for Jane, Feferi or the rest of the people in the park.)

"I've sparred with Jane before." He said, a little too loudly. "You're not bad, Crocker, but I could give you a few pointers."

If they were expected to train the others, maybe he should get to work on the project he'd drawn up for Jake. His birthday was a while off, but the sparring robot would be more appropriate now. (And it would teach Jake to stay on his toes and pay attention to his surroundings.)

Feferi blinked, then giggled and wiped the excess sunscreen onto Dirk's arm and claiming his hand with both of hers. She grinned at Jane. "Oooh, tanks!! I bellyflop on grammar sometimes much to my mother's despair," she said with a sigh. Fef managed to look downcast for a moment before she looked up again, grinning and tossing her head to throw one of her braids back over her shoulder without relinquishing her grip on Dirk's hand.

"What kind of fighting do you prefer Jane?" she asked with interest, her pink eyes sparkling cheerfully at the other girl. Feferi flashed her teeth, smiling in happy obliviousness to the mood shift she had spurred with her wanton sunscreen smearing. "Are you a fencer tuna? I fin I'm pretty useless with a swordfish... It's been ages since I've had one in hand!!!"

Jane had never been one to dislike puns. Quite the contrary; she was incredibly fond of them herself, and was rather skilled in both their speed and delivery. But for some reason, those of the aquatic nature were becoming stale, and rapidly so. She shot Dirk a withering look with his words. "'Not bad', huh? You'd better watch it, Strider. I can feel my ego climbing by the moment." Her words were teasing, but her eyes remained locked to his own shaded gaze, swimming with unspoken questions. They would need to speak later.

Jane had to admit, her usually easygoing smile was a bit forced as she turned back to Feferi, doing her best to be polite. As confused (and, if she was honest with herself, a bit jealous) as Jane was by her presence, the overexcited woman had done nothing wrong save for buying her local botique out of all its pink sportsware. "I do enjoy fencing, but I actually prefer working with two handed weapons more. Tridents, bow staffs... That sort of thing. I'm a bit rusty with weapons, though. It's hand-to-hand combat that my father was most interested in teaching me, and what I am best at."

[personal profile] hoperidesagain 2016-04-26 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake was still a bit...flustered if he was honest, barely registering that Dirk had taken the bottle and handed it over. But he recovered after a moment, eyes flicking between him and Feferi ad he cleared his throat. "Y-Yes! Handle myself and all that. No need for Ms. Feferi to trouble herself." It had been welcomed though.

He did gladly take the change of subject, grinning as he applied the much needed protection. "Boxing is my sport, and I'm an ace with guns. Love berettas the most though. Just give em a twirl and nothing else feels better. Oh! Janey."

He squirted a bit of sunscreen on his hand, nodding to it. "Sure you don't need some?"

Feferi's fish puns were getting out of hand. Even Dirk had to take a second to decipher that last sentence. He rolled his eyes and shot her a mildly annoyed look.

"I don't fence."

She was holding his hand again, but he didn't bother to try to pull away. She couldn't take a hint, so it wouldn't do him any good.

He held Jane's gaze easily with his own eyes hidden behind his shades. "My bad, Crocker, I didn't realize it was my job to stroke your ego. I'll get right on that."

He nearly groaned out loud when Jake offered Jane sun screen. Christ, this could get really awkward, really quickly. (Especially if Feferi decided to offer a hand as well.)

"I think everyone can handle putting on their own sun screen, English." He cut in.

Feferi had opened her mouth to offer to help Jane apply sunscreen but closed it at Dirk's interruption. She released her grip on Dirk and attempted to transfer her affection to holding Jane's hands. Feferi practically threw of excited sparks. "You fight with a trident TOO??!!???!!!!" she squealed gleefully, practically jumping up and down.

"Oh my cod I didn't fin to bring mine but I could and we could spar and I haven't gotten a good spar with a peer in a clam's age!!!" Feferi exclaimed rapturously, actually starting to jump up and down as she beamed at the other.

"Have you ever had a chance to try a double trident? It's SUCH a different kettle of fish but it's reely FUN to throw in spins and flips and you have to keep track of so many more fins at once!!!!!" Feferi giggled. Jane's mysterious origins notwithstanding, Fef was wholeheartedly excited at the prospect of a good trident match.

"Or underwater fighting..." she mused, looking around the park. If Jane had allowed Fef to seize her hands she would give them a squeeze. "Glub, reely going to need to find a betta place to practice..."

Jane flushed at Jake's offer, and prepared to eagerly consent, but was quickly shut down by the elder Strider. She was about to tell Jake that he was more than welcome to administer what he'd already squirted in his hand if he liked, but she quickly found her own rather preoccupied. She was nearly swept up in the ball of excitement that was Feferi, mouth hanging slack as the rather energetic woman seized hold. She was too caught by surprise to pull back, but to be frank, her earnest attitude was rather... Infectious. A slow smirk spread over Jane's lips, and she began to lighten up, a brow cocking to the taller woman.

"I prefer a spear on the opposite end of my own trident." She said, calmer than Feferi but nonetheless pleased herself. It was rare that she found another who was frond... Ahem, /fond/ of the same tool. "And I would love to spar with you sometime, Feferi."

Her eyes locked to Jake's then and she nodded him over, managing to pry a hand free of Fef's grasp so that she could motion to her neck. "Why don't you get where I can't reach, dear? The favor would be much appreciated."

Jake stuck a tongue out at Dirk as he skipped his way behind Jane, happily and gently applying the sunscreen to the back of her neck. "Jeeze Strider. Gotta learn to play like a team you know. We can do lots of things on our own but doing it with someone is a lot more fun!"

Jake raised an eyebrow as the two grew so excited over mutual use of a weapon, chuckling somewhat and thinking for a moment.

"Say...think you could do something spiffy with like a tree branch? Considering you got that whole plant thing going on. Make like a tree trident. A triplent? I dunno. Just thinking out loud. Stop me if I'm stupid.

He wondered why he even tried with these two. They never listened to him anyway. He rolled his eyes at Jake's childish gesture.

"Keep your tongue in your mouth unless you're gonna use it, English." He muttered to Jake. (And what he fuck, why had he gone and said that?)

He tensed as Feferi collided with Jane, ready to break up a fight if he needed to, but they appeared to be getting along now. His expression softened and he smiled, just a little, at the pair. (He actually didn't know who he'd bet on in a fight between the two.)

"We whale DEFINITELY spar soon!!!" Feferi grinned and released Jane's hands, watching Jake with the sunscreen for a moment. Tree thing? She kept her thoughts to herself briefly as she considered the implications of a tree power but watching Jake rub sunscreen onto Jane's neck set off a little buzzer in the back of her brain.

She frowned, eyebrows coming together as she tilted her head up to look at Dirk, trying to catch ahold of the errant thought.

Feferi gasped and grabbed the front of the fairly tight tanktop she had forced him into earlier and dragged it up. "Dirk!! Your abs!!!! Your BACK!!!! There were shirts with SPF rating but this wasn't one of them!!!!" she exclaimed, distressed and doing her height-challenged darndest to yank the thin material up over his head. "YOU NEED MORE SUNSCREEN!!!"

Jane smiled as Jake began to apply sunscreen to the back of her neck, taking the bottle from him and beginning to lather it upon her arms. "That's not a stupid idea at all!" She assured him warmly, glancing back to her friend with a soft smile. "If I worked on fine-tuna-ing my ability..." She said, giving a little giggle at the pun. She had to admit, it was fun. "I might be able to toggle it as needed into different shapes. The possibilities are-" She was cut off abruptly by Feferi's exclamation, and she jumped a bit, eyes widening as she edged a tad closer to Jake. She had seen enthusiasm, but this was a bit excessive. Intimidating, even. Dirk hated to be touched like this. It had taken quite some time for Jane to get even the stray hug. Who was this girl and what were her intentions with her best friend? Did he need help?

She watched, preparing to step in if need be to assist in reconstructing the bubble Feferi had so expertly popped again and again.

[personal profile] hoperidesagain 2016-04-26 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Jake blinked a bit at Dirk's retort, raising an eyebrow and smirking to him with a shake of his head. "I'll use my tongue however I want and with whoever I want thank you! You included, Strider."

He grinned at Jane's response, giving a small rub to the back of her neck. "That'd be so cool! I was trying to think of more offensive ways to- W...what."

And he watched as the perfect storm that was this woman was unleashed upon his friend. He was stunned at first, just staring on as a man who rarely hugged him. And she was attempting to strip him? In public? And he didn't even know her last name?

No. No, this does not go.

He quickly stepped in, lowering the shirt back down and pressing his hand to her shoulder in a soft, 'polite' motion as he cleared his throat. "...so. As Dirk was saying, I think we all can handle the sunscreen ourselves. If the man would like help with that, he'll let us know. Please don't take people's shirts off without them asking. Or unless you're paying them some heavy sugar. Then that'd be a more private thing, eh?"

Just to ensure the point stood, he kept himself between the two, looking back to Dirk with a thumb's up. "So! My main D, you need help with that?"

Dirk blushed at Jake's answer. He should have been expecting that, really, but Jake often had the ability to catch him off guard. (The question was, did Jake really mean any of that? Did he even know what he was saying? Christ, Dirk was in too deep-)

He didn't get a chance to think on it further before Feferi was shouting something at him and trying to tear his shirt off. His blush darkened as his stomach and part of his chest were exposed to, well, everyone else in the park.

"W-What the hell?!" He felt one of the seams rip. (Why the hell was this shirt so tight in the first place?) And then there was Jake, saving him from Hurricane Feferi.

He adjusted his shirt with a huff, scowling when it didn't quite sit right. It was hanging off his shoulder now, and there was a noticeable tear on one side. (Damn. Feferi was strong for someone so small.)

He covered his face with both hands, groaning softly and willing Jake to shut up. His face was still bright read.

"I'm fine." He snapped, probably too harshly. "I don't need the damned sun screen or anyone's help with it."

He dropped his hands and glared at both Jake and Feferi from behind his shades. "And you two can keep your tongues and heavy sugar to yourselves, Christ."

Feferi huffed and propped her hands on her hips as she frowned up at Jake. "Now look what you've done!!!! I had enough trouble getting it on his FACE!!" she protested, then looked up at Dirk. She clapped her hands over her mouth to stifle her peal of laughter.

"Oh no!!!!" she said in between giggles, shucking off her loose pink shirt and holding it out to him. "Sorry!!!!! I didn't mean to tear it!!!!! I just didn't want you to get sunburned!!!"

Feferi, who was clearly as comfortable in her bright pink spandex without the additional layer as she was when dressed normally continued holding out the shirt to him. "Might look less.... Tarzan-y?" she said, her eyes glittering with amusement. She bit her lip to keep from laughing any more, actually feeling a little guilty about his embarrassment.

"Honestly you don't have anyfin to be embarrassed about!!" she said, attempting to cheer him up. "Guys without shirts don't get in trouble!!! I'd take my whole top off but apparently that's illegal." Feferi rolled her eyes to invite him to share in how ridiculous of a law it is. "Even if it would be less hot!!! It's SO unfair!!" She shook her head and her braids lashed back and forth.

She looked over at Jane expectantly. "I mean if guys can take their shirts off when it gets too hot, why not girls?" she asked.

Woah There Friend You Might Want To Slow Down

[personal profile] mustachioedmaiden 2016-04-27 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Jane was very close to moving to stand in front of Dirk in an almost defensive maneuver when all of a sudden Feferi was holding a wad of pink in her hand. It took her a moment to realize that the "wad" in question was actually Feferi's shirt. And for some reason Jane now wanted to stand in front of Jake instead. Her face flamed and her jaw hung slack, sputtering a bit as Feferi turned to Jane as if expecting her to titter her agreement. "I- I am of the belief that /everyone/ should remain fully clothed in public, thank you very much!" She huffed, smoothing down the front of her pants as if she had quite literally been unruffled.

"Though I suppose your business is your business and all of that. But you shouldn't go around... Exposing people.... All willy nilly without their say so! It is in poor taste!" Jane gripped the bottom of her shirt's hem as if fearful that she was next.

One moment Jake had been in control, on top of everything, and defending his bro with all of his heart.

The next, Dirk had snapped at him for...some reason. He couldn't really understand what. But it did kinda hurt to get. Dirk was usually pretty calm about any and everything, so to be on the end of that...it was a bit worrying.

However, before he could try to find out what he had done to upset the man so, there was suddenly a less clothed Feferi in front of him, shirt held out as if it was no big deal. His eyes flicked on her, face flushed, and he was frozen in place. "...h-huh?"

Then Jane was before him and he took the moment to turn around to Dirk, face beet red and hands clasped over his face as he mumbles to his bro. "...I...Well, I'm...starting to see how she somehow got that stain on your face by this point. I'm having a hard time staying composed too man."

"Put your shirt back on." Dirk told Feferi, his tone even despite his still red face. He didn't know what to do with her.

"I don't need it. And I'm not embarrassed about that." He hissed.

He didn't know what to do with any of them, really. He needed to go home and lock himself in his bedroom for the next hundred years or so.

"I- What? I'm not-" He tore his gaze away from Feferi to frown at Jake. He scrubbed his cheek with the heel of his hand, trying to rub off the stain Jake was talking about but completely missing it. "Christ, English, pull yourself together. I ain't flustered about Feferi taking her fuckin' top off."

He was denying all of this way too much, but he'd long since lost control over this situation and now all he wanted to do was get far, far away from these three.

Feferi alone of all of them looked unabashed as she shrugged and pulled her short back on since it was easier than holding it in her hand. She smiled at dirks statement. "Sea? He's fine," she said aloud to no one in particular. "And I AM still fully dressed," she said primly. "Much more covered than the average two piece swim suit so I don't sea what all the fuss is about."

Feferi huffed and sat on the ground to dig through her backpack industriously, trying to remember if she'd packed another change of clothes for dirk or if that was still in the car. Honestly they were glubbing as much as Eridan did sometimes. Fully dressed indeed.

Feferi had the comparative disadvantage of spending a majority of her time in the water, where more layers only added drag and slowed down your swim times. Her idea of normal and covered were drastically different than the average persons.

[personal profile] mustachioedmaiden 2016-04-27 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
The spectacle that was Hurricane Feferi was briefly forgotten in the wake of Dirk and Jake's exchange. She recalled she and Jake's earlier conversation, and put several pieces together in quick succession. Jake liked her, but he liked Dirk too. He had admitted as much when she confessed to him. Dirk knew about her feelings for Jake. He'd admitted he had known about these feelings long before she had told him. He was a good bro. And as she looked to Dirk's flustered expression and his attitude, Jane began to realize something very, very important that she had neglected to notice in her own foolish feelings.

... He liked Jake too.

"Oh, shit." she murmured beneath her breath, shoulders sagging a bit as her eyes flicked between the two men. Her gaze fixed to Jake then, their warm, blue depths revealing her slight disappointment though her smile stayed light enough. He liked Feferi too; she could tell as much. Perhaps it wasn't a full out crush yet, but knowing Jake she wouldn't be surprised if it got there soon enough. Jane wasn't sure what she'd been expecting to glean from telling Jake that she liked him, and him liking her right back, but to be honest it hadn't been this. Quickly, she was beginning to realize that well... Jake liked everyone. She'd just been too wrapped up in herself to see that.

Giving a little sigh, she straightened, deciding that there was no use moping about something she could not change. This was a meeting about their powers, after all; not a place to discuss feelings. Her lips hardened into a firm line, and she rolled back her shoulders, happy to change the subject. Her eyes, determined now, flicked about the park, noting where others had broken off to spar. "Do any of you all wish to spar with me, or should I find another partner?" She said, words a bit more taut than she intended.

A Foolish Man

[personal profile] hoperidesagain 2016-04-27 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Jake didn't turn himself around until he was sure Feferi had become more clothed, shaking his head as he rubs at his eyes. This woman was too much to handle and he barely even knew her. Lord have mercy if he were to get to know her better. Which honestly when she wasn't being a whirling force of attempting to kill him, she was nice to be around. He'd just have to get better at handling the deathly times.

But something else caught his attention as he felt...It was hard to ever explain. But he had felt this before with Dirk at the cafe after his incident...and when he had been talking to Jane. Like something negative was just sucking in the light around an area...and he realized it was just a soft feeling coming from Jane. She was losing hope about something.

So he walked himself over and clasped her shoulder with his hand, giving a squeeze and then a thumbs up with the other. "I'd love to spar with ya, Janey! And...uh..." He glanced over his shoulder, leaning in and regarding her with caring eyes, voice soft for just her to hear. "...you okay there? You seem a bit...down."

"I'm alright, dear." Jane said with a little smile, hoping that it passed as convincing enough. She hated how her heart skipped a bit as he looked at her like that, her own eyes meeting his warmly. But now, knowing what she knew about Dirk, she wasn't sure she could say anything more on good conscience. She walked away a bit from the group, shooting a meaningful, understanding glance back towards Dirk before turning to face Jake head on, setting her stance. "It's been a while since I've sparred; ever since dad died I just haven't had it in me like I used to." she said, quickly changing the subject. "You'll have to forgive me if I'm a bit rusty."

Emotions Are Difficult

[personal profile] hoperidesagain 2016-04-27 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Jake bit his lip as he was a bit worried about Jane, if he was honest with himself. Something was nagging at him that there was more going on with her than she was letting on, but she'd just say something if that was the case right? She wouldn't not say something. That'd be silly. Right?

He shook his head of those thoughts, letting her walk a bit ahead. "Hold on!"

He turns back to Dirk and Feferi, giving them both a small wave and clearing his throat. "Strider, we should probably talk again soon. And Feferi, I uh...Hope to see you at the cart again! There'll be another fish sandwich or two with your name on it. Have a good one!"

And then he was off back with Jane, smiling to her and clapping her on the back. "Don't worry. I'm sure you'll mop the floor with me."

Dirk: Abscond

[personal profile] coltblooded 2016-04-27 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Jane was looking at him strangely, but he didn't get a chance to ask about it before she and Jake were saying their goodbyes and wandering off. He waved absentmindedly to them. His mind was elsewhere as he imagined himself locked in his quiet, dark bedroom.

He nudged Feferi with his foot.

"Hey. I don't need to spar with any of the amateurs, so I'm heading home."
lunaquatic: (smirk)

Feferi slid an arm around his waist and leaned into him affectionately before looking up at him. "Do you want a ride?" she asked. She didn't feel particularly interested in sparring with amateurs either but there were still a lot of people to interrogate. Still, she'd brought him and she'd take him home too. They could discuss what they had learned and perhaps he would have more information about why Jane said her mother had been THE Betty Crocker.

Dirk tolerated the affection for a moment, then gently nudged her away. He shook his head in answer.

"I'll walk." He replied.

He glanced around the park until he spotted Dave. He didn't look like he was in any danger, so Dirk went against his gut instinct and let him be. (Though he did send him a quick text, letting him know he was leaving.)

"I'll see you around."

He didn't wait for her to answer before he walked away, heading in the wrong direction before he remembered they'd been forcibly moved. He changed course, but kept up his slow pace. He wasn't really in a hurry.
